Do-It-Yourself

Referred to at the courthouse as a "pro se" filing (this means "for yourself"). If you choose this option you will file all your own paperwork. There are paralegals who can be hired to review your paperwork before you submit it to the court.  Some attorneys are also available to review your paperwork and give consultation on an hourly basis.Click here for more info .

Mediation

Mediation is "facilitated negotiation".  A mediator is a neutral party that facilitates the negotiation between the two parties getting a divorce.  There are four ways to get mediation services: 1)court-connected mediators working at the courthouse in "Family Court Services", 2) private practice mediators who work on their own or in group practice. Go to the New Mexico Mediation Association www.nmma.info for more information.  3) Agencies and clinics that offer a wide range of mediation services often on a sliding-fee scale.  4) Community Mediation Centers that are often staffed by trained volunteers and may provide limited divorce mediation services.

Refer to "The Divorce Mediation Handbook" by Paula James for a comprehensive overview of mediation.
